Reference activities of the Department cover confirmation of the causative agents and diagnostic and specialized analyses, HIV consulting, diagnosis of viral hepatitis (VH) , chlamydia and syphilis. The Department has also been involved in the preparation of the NIPH EQAS samples for the serology of HIV, VH, Chlamydia, and syphilis and for molecular diagnosis of VHB and VHC. The research activities focus on the molecular diagnosis and epidemiology of hepatitis, HIV, and syphilis.

The following four national reference laboratorie (NRLs) are part of the department:

• NRL for Viral Hepatitis
• NRL for Chlamydia
• NRL for the Diagnostics of Syphilis
