Laboratory of Bacterial Genetics

Head: Professor Alexandr Nemec, Ph.D. et Ph.D.

The laboratory comes under the Head of the CEM.

Scope

  • Research (as the major focus) and reference activities related to opportunistic pathogenic bacteria from the group of non-fermentative gram-negative rods.
  • Subspecies typing of gram-negative bacteria for the needs of epidemiological analysis of hospital infections.
  • Systematic taxonomic study of the genus Acinetobacter (www.szu.cz/anemec/Classification.pdf).
  • Study of the population genetic structure of Acinetobacter spp., Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and the Burkholderia cepacia complex in relation to multidrug resistance and other clinically and diagnostically important characteristics of these bacteria.
  • Study of the evolution of multidrug resistance in Acinetobacter baumannii and related species on a model of the relationship between the bacterial population structure and genetic organization and resistance gene expression.
  • The use of a wide range of classification and diagnostic methods based on the analysis of genotypic and phenotypic characteristics of bacteria.
  • Training of undergraduate and postgraduate students (www.szu.cz/anemec/anemec.htm).
  • Cooperation with researchers from other countries, in particular with those  from the Leiden University Medical Center, University of Ghent, University of Cologne, Institut Pasteur, etc., and from the Czech Republic (Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, Institute of Experimental Biology, Masaryk University, Brno, etc.).
  • Cooperation with diagnostic laboratories within the Acinetobacter Working Group.
