Project goal

The Project goal was to modernize the equipment of the National Reference Laboratory for Products Intended for Contact with Foodstuffs and Products Intended for Children under Three Years of Age established by the Ministry of Health of the Czech Republic to meet the requirements of Regulation 882/2004/EC of The European Parliament and of the Council. The modernization included adding new instruments to the equipment inventory and replacing the outdated ones. The following instruments were purchased within the Project: a UV-VIS cuvette double-beam spectrophotometer, a high-performance liquid chromatography instrument with a mass detector enabling higher-order fragmentation (HPLC-MS/MS (MSn), a micro-wave furnace with accessories, and an atomic absorption spectrometer (AAS) with electrothermal and flame atomizers. As the obligation to perform chemical analytical tests is laid down by the above-mentioned EU regulation, it was necessary to equip the NRL with the instruments needed for this purpose. With these advanced instruments, the NRL is currently able to develop and implement more sensitive analytical methods for the detection of a wide range of toxic substances which is crucial in safety testing of products intended for contact with foodstuffs, products intended for children under three years of age, and toys.

Project publicity

A press conference marking the completion of the Project was held on December 16, 2010 to present the potential of the new laboratory equipment for consumer health protection in general and for children health protection in particular. A practical demonstration was also made of the detection of unsafe products.
