Project goal

The Project goal is to modernize the equipment of the national reference laboratories (NRLs) of the National Institute of Public Health that are involved in laboratory surveillance of important infectious diseases and ATB resistance. The Project consists of the following activities:

• KA1 - Preparation of tender procedures for the supply of apparatuses;
• KA2 - Modernization of the equipment for molecular diagnosis and epidemiology of airborne bacterial infections (NRL for Streptococci and Enterococci, NRL for Meningococcal Infections, and NRL for Haemophilus Infections);
• KA3 - Modernization of the equipment for molecular diagnosis and epidemiology of respiratory and intestinal virus infections (NRL for Influenza, NRL for Non-Influenza Viruses, NRL for Enteroviruses);
• KA 4 - Modernization of the equipment for molecular diagnosis and epidemiology of bacterial resistance (NRL for Antibiotics).

Modernized equipment will make it possible for these NRLs to conduct laboratory surveillance at the level required by the World Health Organization (WHO) and European Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (ECDC) in accordance with Decision No 2119/98/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council setting up a network for the epidemiological surveillance and control of communicable diseases in the Community.

The Project focuses on the quality improvement of laboratory surveillance programs for selected infectious diseases. To achieve this goal, more equipment capacity and equipment upgrade are needed. The Project consists of the following three parts:

1. Modernization of the equipment for molecular diagnosis and epidemiology of bacterial and viral pathogens.
2. Purchase of the respective HW and SW and network installation.
3. Pilot study of data collection efficacy. The Project will have a high impact on the whole population of the Czech Republic as a result of the improved laboratory surveillance of selected infectious diseases. This outcome will make it possible to substantially reduce morbidity and mortality, to improve preventive health care, and to stick to international commitments of the Czech Republic.
