Project goal

The Project goal is to produce strategic noise maps, specifically for the main railway lines, Václav Havel airport Prague-Ruzyně, and urban agglomerations Ostrava, Plzeň, Ústí nad Labem - Teplice, Liberec, and Olomouc.

Both public health and statistical studies provide evidence of the negative effect of noise on human health. Long-term exposure to excessive noise causes hypertension, heart disorders including increased risk of myocardial infarction, immunity impairment, chronic tiredness, and sleeplessness. The incidence of non-communicable diseases increases with the increasing noise level. The main cause of hearing loss is no longer the ageing process, but exposure to excessive noise. The hearing impairment is mostly irreversible.

The available noise mapping has shown that about 300,000 population in the Czech Republic are annoyed by noise. As the noise mapping was not done for the whole country, this is still not the final figure. Based on the data from the World Health Organization (WHO), long-term exposure to noise of more than 55 dB is highly annoying and may trigger a range of diseases. Noise above 65 dB is considered by physicians as unbearable in the long run and causing damage to human health. After five years of staying in a noisy environment, it is possible to identify unambiguously the relationship between noise annoyance and conditions caused or aggravated by noise.

Tender procedures

The tender for the production of strategic noise maps was divided into the following three parts:

1. Main railway lines – with more than 30,000 trains per year;
2. Václav Havel airport Prague-Ruzyně – a main airport with more than 50,000 take-offs and landings per year, apart from take-offs and landings of light aircraft trainers;
3. Selected urban agglomerations defined by Regulation No 561/2006 on establishing a list of urban agglomerations for the purposes of noise assessment and reduction:

• Ostrava;
• Plzeň;
• Ústí nad Labem – Teplice;
• Liberec;
• Olomouc.
